The Financial Times has reported that there is a “live debate” in Whitehall around whether the UK should leave the customs union with the EU or not, following the result of the EU referendum. Open Europe examined this issue in detail 18 months ago. There is little doubt that, if it is going to leave the EU, it should leave the customs union.
